Australian Rare Earths Limited (ASX: AR3) has reported a major milestone in its exploration activities at the Overland Project, a newly identified uranium frontier in South Australia. In 2024, the company drilled 3,271 meters across 25 air core holes, revealing a north-south trending palaeovalley that enhances the region’s potential for sedimentary-hosted uranium deposits.

 

 

Palaeovalley Discovery Validates Geological Model

 

The inaugural drilling campaign at Overland confirmed the presence of a palaeovalley system comprising Murray Group stratigraphy with interbedded sands, clays, and lignite horizons. This geological setting meets key criteria for sedimentary-hosted uranium deposits, including:

 

  • Proximity to uranium-rich source rocks.
  • Permeable sediments to facilitate migration pathways.
  • Abundant reductants, such as lignite, to act as uranium traps.

 

Notably, lignite horizons along the western margin exhibited anomalous natural gamma readings, marking them as high-priority targets for future drilling.

 

Australian Rare Earths Limited (ASX: AR3) has secured a $5 million grant from the Australian Government, underscoring the strategic importance of the Overland Project in meeting the demand for energy transition metals. The funds will be utilized to further define the palaeovalley system and test primary targets within exploration license EL7001.

 

 

Next Steps in Exploration

 

Drilling will recommence this month, focusing on:

 

  • Mapping the southern extension of the palaeovalley.
  • Testing high-priority lignite targets along the western margin.

 

Australian Rare Earths Limited (ASX: AR3) is also leveraging a partnership with CSIRO, supported by the Kick-Start Program, to analyze historical airborne geophysical data. This initiative aims to refine sediment-basement mapping, optimizing drill targeting for subsequent campaigns.
