In a world hungry for critical minerals, Krakatoa Resources (ASX: KTA) is quietly unlocking one of the most compelling antimony-gold plays outside China and Russia. At the heart of its strategy is the Zopkhito Project in the mineral-rich Racha region of Georgia—a high-grade, underexplored system rediscovered at just the right time.
Â
“The antimony market has shifted radically,” said CEO Mark Major in a recent investor interview in London. “China closed its doors, Russia and Tajikistan control a further third—Western nations are scrambling for stable supply.” With antimony now recognized as a critical mineral by the EU, US, and Australia, Krakatoa’s timing couldn’t be better.

What makes Zopkhito truly stand out is grade and geometry. A foreign resource estimate reports 225,000 tonnes at 11.6% Sb, far surpassing most peer projects globally—Major compares it to other deposits averaging around 1.3%. Combined with 815,000 ounces of gold grading 3.7g/t, Zopkhito emerges not just as a strategic asset, but as a versatile one. According to Major, “10% antimony is like 40g/t gold on a gold-equivalent basis. With our gold included, we’re closer to 50g/t.”
Â
The project’s legacy is deep. Originally explored by the Soviets from 1929–1979, it boasts 27km of underground adits and over 20,000 samples—but no drilling. That’s set to change. Krakatoa begins maiden surface and underground drilling in Q3 2025, targeting a JORC-compliant resource by Q1 2026. Initial metallurgical results already confirm flotation concentrate grades of up to 56% Sb, while gold, interestingly, reports separately—offering a dual-stream processing opportunity.
Â
Major also highlights a potentially transformative zone of high-grade gold in the footwall and hanging wall areas—outside the antimony veins—reporting historical intercepts up to 11g/t Au, previously unmined.
Â
Crucially, Georgia’s transparent European-aligned mining code, existing mining licence through 2042, and export-ready infrastructure provide a springboard for future development. “It’s not just exploration. This is confirmatory drilling. Even partial conversion of what we already know can support small-scale production,” says Major.
Â
Financing is next. Krakatoa is planning to raise ~$2 million, favoring long-term strategic investors over speculative capital. “We’ve had interest from European offtakers and royalty groups,” Major confirms. “Europe is open for business—and they want supply security.”
Â
Krakatoa’s plan is clear: validate, convert, and unlock the first phase of production via small-scale antimony concentrate sales, while continuing to test the broader gold system. It's a measured yet ambitious approach, supported by a team with deep regional and technical experience.
Â
In an antimony market forecast to reach USD 4.1 billion by 2034, per Exactitude Consultancy, Krakatoa’s high-grade profile, jurisdictional strength, and execution roadmap place it ahead of the curve. As the West races to secure new antimony sources, KTA may be sitting on a resource whose time has finally come.
